Furnishing Your Pad

Trying to redecorate or renovate?

I recently stumbled on this Apartment Therapy site, and it has everything, from stores, to services, to reviews of best products. Metropolis Mag also has a helpful visual directory.

Otherwise, you can also use the user-unfriendly New York Mag home directory, check out the links on Brownstoner or Curbed.

General NYC shopping advice: Kitchen and lighting stores line Bowery Street below Delancey, although some of it is more geared towards industrial kitchens. You could easily spend one day trekking in the “home district” area around Sixth Avenue from 14th to 23rd, where you’ll find the usual big box suspects like Bed Bath & Beyond, The Container Store and Restoration Hardware. You’ve also got large furniture stores like Jensen-Lewis and the Door Store as well as a host of other smaller places.

Other places you might want to check are the Design Within Reaches throughout the city, Gracious Home up in the UES, ABC Carpet & Home above Union Square, and of course the only Home Depot in the city, on 23rd street.

If you’d rather pinch your pennies, you can always take the IKEA bus to the Paramus IKEA.

Also check out http://www.furnifind.com, not as much editorial content as Apartment Therapy but they have a larger directory and pretty good categorization of their listings.
