You’re Only Really Rich When You Can Give it All Away

We’ll have to take the Telegraph’s word that a hedge fund charity event raised about $32.6MM (£17.2m) — the most amount of money, ever, for a single night charity bash.
The best part is the that the Brits outdid a record set by their U.S. hedgie counterparts by a few hundred thousand pounds. Of course it’s for a good cause, but it sounds so Guinness Book of World Records-esque, you can’t help wonder if it was intentional.
“The fabulous ball at Marlborough House, where 1,000 guests were serenaded by Sir Elton John, is believed to have raised well over £17.5m - outstripping the record $31.9m pledged by US hedge fund members at their Robin Hood Foundation event last year.”
Other fabulous details:
- A guitar lesson from Coldplay’s Chris Martin & dinner with Gwyneth Paltrow was auctioned for ~$260,000
- Every attendee received a personal letter of thanks from Bill Clinton
And in other auction news: Gursky’s “Avenue of the Americas” was bought by the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art for $374,400.
