Who Gets Paid the Most?

The WSJ reports that pay for venture capitalists is up 35 percent this year, with average pay for all employees at $777k, still a far cry from average private equity pay of $1.2MM (an increase of more than 61 percent from last year).
Why so (relatively) low? Well for one, returns from VC firms was lower — 13.8 percent vs. 31.7 percent for private equity, according to the Journal, citing Cambridge Associates. Nevertheless, one VC partner says that demand for VC placements is greater than supply, driving the increase in salaries, which are not surprisingly still lower than the boomtown highs.
Here are the details of the survey, which included data from 62 VC firms and represent total comp:
- Managing General Partner: $1,960,000
- Senior Partner: $1,491,000
- Partner/MD: $614,000
- Principal/VP: $309,000
