I-Banker Working Hard, Playing Hard, Inviting Ridicule

You would think with all of the Vayner mania, any sane banker/banker wannabe would try to stay out of the limelight. But no.

Codetv has a clip of one brave analyst, showing the world the joys of West Chelsea nightlife. (The screenshot of the vid above links to the site, I couldn’t get it to feed into this post)

Who: A.J., 23, financial analyst at a large investment bank (with friends Clayton, Tom, Tony and Rob), as well as two young ladies, going “wild” at Cain.

Choice quotes:

“Models and bottles.”

“The guys I roll with, I mean they’re the real deal. They work hard, they play hard, they have the money to play hard.”

“Party hard in style.”

Lets set the record straight, this guy is a piker, I can’t believe that I wasted my time watching this garbage. But since I am here I must critique this video. A.J. if he was a real top dog, would be showing up in a Bentley or a Maybach driven by a chauffer. A.J. will be driving drunk in Manhattan, that’s like trading Nat Gas while smoking crack. Next, A.J. is much too enamored with the two models (yeah right! I want to short their agency pronto! When I think player I think of a guy that is trading Asia then and only then, screwing Asia. I guess that I am a little bit twisted but wanted to see someone who is making 10 million on his cellphone in the bathroom while telling the girls that he is busy. That’s a player. A.J. is player-lite.

Bentley, Maybach? That’s for 50-60 year old CEO’s, PMD’s or someone on the board…if he said he was older, then I’d expect a little more balling if you will, but at 23, presumably just out of undergrad - that’s pretty darn good. I think we’re forgetting that at 23 “player-lite” is fine. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

About wasting time, yeah - this video is pointless. There’s nothing controversial (like ehemm a certain private banker, or a guy that can lift 500 lbs). This guy is having a good time, and so be it.

    1) This kid is one year out of school, so he obviously does not make that much money.
    2) This kid has had that car for at least 5 or 6 years.
    3) He gets his money from his parents.

How do I know this you ask? I went to college with the kid. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not the worst kid in the world. But he is clearly condescending and needs to be knocked down a peg or two.

I refrained from commenting because I knew him closely from school (even worked on a project with him) but I’m going to play devil’s advocate:

About # 1 - his “analyst” job may not be his main driver of income, we don’t know that. There could be other sources, but Code.tv only played off that one job.

To rebuke #2 which is the most glaring mistake. If you look closely at the video (look at the headlights) - that’s the new Boxster which was released for model year 2005 he couldn’t have had that car for more than two years. Also, the wheels on the car weren’t even available five or six years ago on the Boxster.

    # 3 - This is what you hear from HS kids when their daddy didn’t buy them a new BMW like the others. Easiest assumption in the world, and there’s no way we can know.

True, he is far from being the worst kid around, I can name hundreds at our school that were far worse. He’s smart, and gets ahead of himself sometimes but he’s done a lot of good things for a lot of people so I can’t knock him even though I want to sometimes.

This guy is an obvious douchebag. First of all he’s practically shooting himself in the foot if senior guys recognize him. At 23 he’s nothing but a flea at any bank, if he tries to flaunt his relatively meager pay publicly on the web he’ll likely suffer the same fate as other junior bankers that have done this.

Second, think about his pay for a second. People here are saying things like “I’d love to have all that”. If you’re an associate or higher you know you’re making more than this tool AJ. Analyst pay doesn’t have a wide range, you can assume it falls somewhere between $90k-$150k for the first year (closer to the lower end). Assuming AJ made $100k that works out to about $50k after federal, state, city taxes and other things. This is about $4k/month. Granted if he lives with his mom it’s pretty easy to buy a Porsche and live it up once a week in the clubs with $4k but it doesn’t leave you much. If you’re making mortgage or rental payments in Manhattan than you know right away that it either wasn’t his money that bought the car or he’s living on fumes after his costs.

The fact of the matter is if you have some guy who’s more senior level you can’t really get a sense of what they’re making. I know guys a few years out of b-school who are making $150k and others who are making $3mm. There is a much wider range down the road but analysts all make close to the same.

You, I, and any other banker on this site who is past the analyst level makes more than AJ. The difference is you didn’t want to work just to make car payments when you were 23. Unless AJ’s parents gave him money he has no liquidity. That much I can assure you.

I’m up late working on this brief (in law school). Thought I would take a break and take a look at what everyone thought of this. AJ’s actions do add a little mystique to Wall Street. It’s funny how people think that it’s great to work on Wall Street for the models and bottles lifestyle.

wstrt is not that simplistic, but then again sure it is not uncommon practise either. ppl are diff, obviously some embrace illusion to be the real deal, it might be tempting and rel. easy since lot of grl unfortunatley are that naif to value $$$$$$ over sincere interest. then again you gotta do what you gotta do Its all about eat and destroy or share and love
