Workplace Prestige

It’s a little-known fact that New Yorkers draw inferences about the type of person you are not just about where you live, but where you work, too. Kind of sick, but true.
For instance, if you’re reading this, you probably work either in the financial district or in Midtown East/West. But even in those neighborhoods, there are certain blocks, and within those blocks, certain buildings that just ooze prestige.
Of course we know prestige is bought with money, so what we’re really saying some buildings are better than others, and that’s because those buildings are expensive.
The NY Sun writes that high commercial rents are moving beyond the usually expensive areas (think Park Ave, where all the banks are) to areas like — brace yourself — grungy Lexington and even Park south of Grand Central. Buildings that command more than $100 sq foot were previously limited to 9 W 57th Street or 767 5th Avenue.
The interesting thing is that the higher priced buildings are often in terrible neighborhoods when it comes to food options for those who eat at their desk. As far as I can tell, 57th is pretty much a shopping wasteland. The short of it is that this is good news for those of you who work for firms that need be housed in prestigious/expensive buildings as a matter of competition.
