Holiday Tip Watch

Yet another consequence of having money — you have got to spread the love, too. And in NYC, you have to spread it even if you don’t make a lot of money.
NYMag polled the usual recipients of tips to see what counts as naughty or nice. I’m actually surprised to find out that the average holiday tip for doormen is only about $100 (I wouldn’t know, don’t live in one.)
Way back when I first found out about the Manhattan holiday tipping culture, I had heard holiday tips for doormen were in the hundreds, at least. Perhaps that’s total for the entire staff?
Anyway, here are the NYMag numbers for average / median / expected total / % of all people who tip:
- Doormen: $98 / $50 / $5,100 / 89%
- Garage attendant: $48 / $47.50 / $2,800 / 73%
- Nanny: $349 / $300 / $417 / 90%

In our group we have two assistants and eight people VP and below - we each tend to give $50 to each assistant. Presumably the Principals and MDs are on their own.

Tipping in this country is out of control. No none who recieves a salary should be tipped. I tip jack shit, unless its to a waitress or a stripper.
