Ideas for Project & Code Names

Suggest if you want to scare your coworkers

  • Names of hot coworkers
  • Lord of the Ring characters or Tolkien placenames (same goes for Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter)
  • Countries people are scared of
  • Project Hitler
  • Colors (lavender)
  • Smurf names (Project Papa Smurf)

Obscure takes on overused categories

  • Obsolete greek letters, (i.e. Digamma, Qoppa)
  • Associating companies with comparable Sororities/fraternities (Lamda, Lamda, Lamda; Delta Zeta)
  • Forget Greek/Roman deities. Krishna anyone?
  • European cities spelled backwards (Nodnol, Sirap, Trufknarf — great for healthcare projects)

Other ideas…

  • Dinosaurs or other extinct animals (”Project Dodo” should instill confidence)
  • Characters from Shakespeare
  • Buildings in New York (Beekman; Beresford; Flatiron)
  • Schwarzenegger movies (so many good ones to choose from, Terminator, Predator, Commando)
  • Painters of acceptably Western and familiar art genres (Impressionist)

Real-life duds

  • Project Grand Slam (who hasn’t worked on one of those?)
  • Project Home Run
  • Project Dirt

i’ve always told my i-banking attorney friend the most idiotic would be to suggest naming the deal after the company it’s about. If it’s M&A of Abbott Labs, suggest calling it Project Abbot Labs. When you get a weird look, say that it’s because no one would ever suspect it would be about Abbott Labs if that’s the code name.
