Newest Sign of Super Success: Paying Yourself Salary of $1

Google gang Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt are setting a new bar for success. If you have to actually get paid a salary, well, then … you’re just a poor, sad sap, aren’t you?

In a move undoubtedly inspired by some notion of liberté, equalité, fraternité or probably at least the thought “I’m just so, so, so mind-numbingly rich already,” the three Googlers have once again awarded themselves a salary of $1, a practice they began in 2004, according to this CNN article. Yet, ironically, this salaryman (sarariman) feels outraged. It’s not like the money goes to charity.

Anyway, they’re not the only ones. Probably to fight off an internet firm inferiority complex, Yahoo CEO Terry Semel also pays himself $1. And Steve Jobs, too. Somehow I can’t imagine any rich Wall Street CEOs following suit, even if they’re filthy rich already. It must be a West Coast, dot-com thing.

No one on wall street is all that rich. Revlon “Billionaire”… Only the hedgies have anything close to real tech money. Larry and Sergey have a custom 737, slightly different from even a GV that your company owns and you just have access to and have to write some footnote about.
