What I Learned from Local News Last Night
By BankersBall on Jun 20, 2007 in NYC
Every now and then, there’s something that’s just so rewarding about watching local NYC news. And not for all of those classically local news reasons you might expect. For one, it’s like amateur night, which is not exactly what you would expect with news covering one of the major cities in the U.S. The announcers tend to speak very colloquially; some might even say they sound uneducated, unlike those troops of coiffed, flat-accented suburban newscasters. Local news also has a curious flattening effect: you have no idea how important a “story” is since a story about some huge event is given as much air time as a story about sunscreens. You also find out a bunch of factoids which helped if you were so busy you couldn’t even bother to glance at the CaptivateNetwork all day. Here’s what I learned:
- Bloomberg dropped the GOP.
- There’s furor over a “pornographic” invite to a Maxim/Israeli consulate event celebrating the hotties of the IDF.
- Want to makeover your place to look like a Long Island McMansion? Check out the Sopranos prop sale over in LIC. Now until 6/25. And yes, cash only! (slideshow of the goods)
Now, you tell me what the most important story is.
