Etiquette Time: Toasting, the Proper Way

Make some smooth moves this holiday season.

proper way to toastExpecting to be the belle of the ball? Here are a couple of tips for the more formal setting: if you’re being toasted, don’t do anything - don’t stand, don’t clink your glass and above all, don’t drink to the toast. You’re being complimented, so act how you would if you were being complimented in any other way and refrain from patting yourself on the back.

Also, you can either thank the toaster (in which case you would stand) or offer a counter-toast.

If you are doing the toasting, don’t toast before the host toasts. The host is supposed to make a toast to welcome those to the event. Also hitting your glass to get people’s attention is considered rude.

Toasting contact: there’s actually no need to make glass contact, though it depends on the culture we are talking about. It’s commonly done in the US, but in large groups, quite impractical. So in large groups or other non-glass contact situations, you can always should always make eye contact with your fellow toasters.

In Belgium we generally say ’santé’; even in the dutch-speaking part of the country (may be confusing). However, ‘proost’ is accepted as well.
