1Oak, a Club Where the Currency is Cool
By BankersBall on Dec 2, 2007 in Clublife, Lifestyle, NYC
Your bonus cash won’t buy you entry into this Chelsea club … if it ever opens, that is.
You’ve heard it before, and you’re about it hear it again. A new club is weeks away from opening to revolutionize New York nightlife as we know it. Nightlife vets Richie Akiva, Scott Sartiano, Jeffrey Jah and Ronnie Madra, are on the cusp of opening the much anticipated 1Oak (453 W. 17th).
What’s so different about this club, you ask? Well, for one, you and your kind are not welcome. That’s right, they don’t need your money. The NYT describes what the owners hope to accomplish: “a refuge from the bridge-and-tunnel marauders, gossip-column interlopers and Wall Street masters of the universe accustomed to buying their way past velvet ropes.”
Jah, despite the fact that in past lives he helped institutionalize bottle service, says 1Oak will be different, a place with a “velvet egalitarianism” door policy. Cool, not currency, will be the golden ticket.
“People will have to earn their way past the ropes with an appealing personal style or disposition … not a promise to pay for bottle service, as is the norm in many places” Jah told the NYT
But make no mistake, the pricey bottles will be there. 1Oak will serve food as well as provide bottle service, but cool won’t suffer for it.
“[F]irst you need to get in … Then you need to be cool enough to get a table. Then you can get bottles. Somewhere it got switched” Sartiano told the NY

Haha…what a bunch of losers!
So this Jah guy is the one I can blame for the whole bottle service thing…anywhere where you have to wait on line to get past a velvet rope and only if some obese, half-literate doorman deems you “cool” enough is itself NOT a cool place to hang out.

The 4 owners of this place, ironically, were the ones who probably couldn’t get in anywhere. Club owners/promoters are typically those who couldn’t make it in life and fell into this so-called profession. Doormen…seriously? They make promoters look like college graduates. People need to remember that they are here to serve us, are simply here for our entertainment, and are of little use. Club owners, doormen, and “promoters” (Ha!) are nothing more than power-hungry hacks that get no respect from society at large.
However, good luck to this place, I hope it insulates the other degenerates who would frequent such an establishment, but like them all, it will eventually fail after 3 months of hype.

Interesting, Jah had nothing to do with bottle service in NY. It started with the club (can’t recall the name) that was in the same building as NeXT Modeling agency in the 90’s in SOHO. The problem with club these days, is that they have no concept of ‘customer service’! All you posters above are idiot and know zilch about NY nightlife — you spectators are the one that actually kill it for everyone. I am glad that you jokers will always pay $1000+ to get in. Saddo!
