Black Amex Card Open to the Masses?

Suddenly that platinum card is looking a little … plastic.

According to a blog dedicated to the black American Express Centurion card, those brilliant marketers at Amex are “opening” up the membership of the card to anyone who wants it and fulfills the requirements, which seem include fees ($5,000 initiation; $2,500 annual fee) as well as a minimum annual spend of $250,000 to acquire the card, though it appears you do not need to maintain that level of spend.

The card, which is variously rumored to be made out of titanium or some sort of titanium composite, is indeed metallic. That’s what the $2,500 is for.

Didn’t realize the card had such brand power, but surf around the blog, (which could very well be the creation of those same marketers) and get a sense of the fanaticism. Readers were asked to submit photos of their black cards for proof of membership and one fellow who volunteered is LA hedge funder Noland Nelson, who reportedly spends $2MM annually on the card.

Not to be outdone, a NY-based reader responded below with his own proof. I wonder what about Noland got under this guy’s grill.

But in the end it’s a dentist who with his pics of the black card plus two Bentleys who takes the cake. Isn’t it always?

I wonder if the black card is really worth it now considering the benefits of the Plum?
