Carbon NYC

We’re just finding out about this literal invite-only boys’ club. The press coverage last week (you’ve got to look at the photo) about Scott Galloway’s letter to the NYT as head of activist fund Firebrand Partners led us to awareness about a private club called Carbon NYC. (Incidentally, here’s more on Galloway from Radar:

We hear that Galloway, who also teaches classes at NYU’s Stern School of Business, is a member of Carbon NYC, a $4,800-a-year, invite-only “virtual club” for Big Swinging Dicks founded in 2004. Carbon’s 250-odd members enjoy such perks as sponsored cocktail parties, Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments, and jaunts to the Hamptons to watch polo; they even get a discounted $99 helicopter shuttle service between Wall Street and Kennedy Airport. (Does anyone use car service these days?)

Back to Carbon. Started by former investment banker Jay Friedlander in 2004, the now ~250-strong member (as of mid-2007) club is yes, all male. Initiation is $5,000 and membership is capped at 750 (200-300 people apply each year), according to Forbes. Average age of the members is 37 and min net worth is $1MM. Members include guys like Brett Hickey, the 28-yo head of a private equity firm Aegis Capital Group.

So what do you get for the $5,000? The name of the game seems to be sponsored parties. Advertisers seem like they’re jumping at the opportunity to reach these would-be droogs (check out the Clockwork Orange ref in the intro video), sponsoring their social events (3-5 times/year).

As Alex would say, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well.

I had a dream where I was in X-Bar, sitting catty-corner from David Geffen. He told me his name was Michael Glazer. We sat and told jokes about whisky and vaseline in an Irish accent.

    Does this mean I’m gay?

There are other exclusive and invitation only sites such as ELIXIO…I think the carbon membership fee will drop as the network grows. My 2 cents…
