Aspen, Russian Style

Only those with ankle-length fur OR bespoke full-body ski suits allowed.
Is Feis Kontrol being practiced in Aspen? Not sure, but wallet control soon may be. Russians are hitting Colorado’s ski resorts, including Aspen and Vail in increasing numbers. Shopowners agree — there are more Russians than ever before, reports the Denver Post via WSJ.
Yawn if you’ve heard this too many times before, but their level of spending isn’t quite like ‘regular’ rich folk. Partly because we’re so damn poor compared to them.
Says Kate Kudryavtseva (”adorned head to toe in a fluorescent peach ski suit … [with] faux fur around her hood and her bejeweled headband are the same color. So are her fingernails and the teddy-bear baubles at the end of her thick blond braids” etc etc) about the practically third world prices to be found in Aspen of all places — “Stores in Moscow are three times more expensive, the clothes, even the postcards … Here, you can spend a lot of money on your hotel and dinners or you can spend a little, but everything here is cheaper than Moscow.”
Here’s another example: when the weather got cold, one Russian family called it quits — opting to charter a private jet to the Caribbean.
Ahem.
Well, you would think at least some people would be happy at the influx of cash. Yet service staff in Aspen are among those finding it hard to cope. Three anonymously told the Denver Post of their woes:
“They never show up at scheduled times,” said a concierge at one of Aspen’s nicest hotels. “It’s a real challenge.”
“They treat us like slaves,” said another concierge at another hotel. “We’ve had employees leave work crying because they couldn’t take it.”
“I have never been talked to so rudely,” said a server in one of Aspen’s swankiest bars. “We all know who they are and try to avoid them.”
Wonder if they make it up with huge tips. Any Aspen service staff happening to read this, please comment.
