The We’re Poor Series: Ask for the “American Discount”

Ask for it wherever you go.

Europe may be unaffordable, but not on the “American discount.” At least one restaurant abroad is feeling a wee bit sorry for all of those devalued dollars fluttering about. The famed Harry’s Bar in Venice owned by the Cipriani family (yes, that Cipriani) has a new policy in place for us:

“Harry’s Bar of Venice, in an effort to make the American victims of subprime loans happier, has decided to give them a special 20 percent discount on all items of the menu during the short term of their recovery.”

Ironically, the bar was named after an American named Harry Pickering, who gave the original Cipriani the money used to open the bar. Yes, yes, nothing like Reuters’ Oddly Enough to get back into the thick of things.

We urge those of you abroad to try out the “American Discount” at other places. When the bill comes, look up mournfully at the waiter with your best puppy dog face and whine, “But I’m American!”

We expect that soon it’ll be very commonplace, like haggling … Canadian backpackers will start sewing American flags on their packs …
