Powerpoint All Night Long

Get creative with the tools that you have.

It’s funny — and by funny, I mean sad — how bankers and other cubelifers have to resort to some pretty boring means to express their creativity. Take this site. Or, consider the incessant Craigslist posts or the pumped up Excel models. Powerpoint hasn’t been the favored tool of creative expression, but maybe that will change with what I am about to tell you.

Some of you may already know about Slideshare, basically YouTube for Powerpoint. We’ve done some searching and found a few worth noting. We now leave it up to you to do some searching and uploading. Don’t forget to tip us off to your creations!

  1. Slide 36 of Death by Powerpoint illustrates what not to do. Seen some not as bad, but nearly there…
  2. Citigroup deck for MBAs on Navigating the Recruiting Process, with a month-by-month outline of what to do and when during the banking process, as well as specific tips like “Do not ask anything that could have been garnered from the web site” and the mysterious “Do not become too Familiar”
  3. Lehman Bros Introduction to Investment Banking slideshow for NYU Stern from 2001, with advice on how to come across as the investment banker personality type. Also see slide 21, or interviewing tips (Always look the interviewer(s) in the eye and use their names(s)).

Death by Powerpoint is terrific. Business presentations don’t have to be boring. It’s a pity the message often gets lost in the lousy slides and a poor delivery.

Well if any of you bankers need advice, maybe you should talk to the teacher. I create presentations on these programs all the time for my high school students with a very short attention span. I can turn all your graphs and stats into something exciting :)

power point is for people with no power and no point. A true orator should not need to be diverting the audiences attention to a few words on a screen, his/her speech should make an impact in itself.
