Blackberry Shortcuts, Tips & Tricks #7

Several ways to lock your Blackberry and to disable dialing from the home screen.

Ever get annoyed at the fact that you open up your Blackberry, accidentally hit some random keys, then automatically get shunted to the phone-functionality?

Well, you can actually disable that. And even better, unleash a host of “home screen” shortcuts at the same time.

Disable home-screen dialing:
1. Click phone icon
2. Hit the left-side convenience key
3. Go to Options > General Options > Dial From Home Screen > No

Now, with a single keystroke, you can access all of the following apps:

F = Profiles
L = Calendar
A = Address Book
M = Messages
V = Saved messages
C = Compose

K = Lock Keypad
B = Browser
R = Alarm
S = Search
T = Tasks
U = Calculator
O = Options

Let’s say you like that dialing from the home screen feature. You can always wait for your Blackberry to auto-lock, but compulsive checkers will appreciate the ability to glance and lock multiple times a minute.

Option 1: Assign lock to a convenience key
Options > Screen/Keyboard > Left (or Right) Side Convenience Key Opens > Lock.

Option 2: Alt + Enter
If when you hit this combo, you get a language input option, then disable this first by going to Options > Language > Use Input Language Shortcut > No. Now it should work.

Other Models: Hold “*”
