What Would Coleman Reese Do?
By BankersBall on Aug 3, 2008 in Famous Bankers
Though it’s never said, we have to assume that Coleman Reese, a character out of the latest Batman installment Dark Knight is some sort of banker.
As such we’ll have to add the Wayne Enterprises hack to the list of “Famous Bankers.” Although it’s not exactly clear what his role is, it appears that Reese plays the part of some kind of analyst for the company. Either that or he’s a freshly minted MBA type.
*spoiler alert*
He’s notable for attempting to blackmail Lucius Fox, head of Wayne Enterprises, for $10MM (a year) after finding out Batman’s true identity. The poor guy was probably just resentful after being told to “run the numbers” again by Fox — a situation that many of you are probably familiar with. The memorable quote goes something like this:
Coleman Reese: I want $10 million a year, for the rest of my life, to keep my mouth shut.
Lucius Fox: Let me get this straight. You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail this person? [pauses] Good luck.
Guess that shows you the prevailing opinion of banker types in the public imagination.
Interestingly, Dark Knight message boards are buzzing with speculation that Reese or another Dark Knight character will play a villain in the next Batman movie. Banker as evildoer, anyone?
There’s also a scene when Batman’s Christian Bale channels Patrick Bateman and goes all banker with Fox, discussing something irregular about some financial statements or some such. It was honestly so apropos of NOTHING that it was actually pretty hilarious. For those interested — watch for a scene where Fox and Wayne are discussing how to handle the Lau business.

i think there’s a reference to him being some sort of m&a lawyer, not analyst. garbage. no lawyer could go through 10k’s with such ferocity.

Gosh, bankers as evil? You’d almost think we were living in the Second Gilded Age or something? I blame that evil socialist Samuel Clemens.
