MBA Background Checks

Some b-schools have run background checks on accepted students for years. But applicants?

Call us out of touch with the application process, but this article on how MBA programs sniff out resume embellishments on applicants was a little surprising.

Frankly, we’ve heard a case or two of nearly outright liars that had no problems getting into certain top programs. But according to BusinessWeek, Yale uses security firm Kroll to run full background checks on all applicants (Wharton started running background checks on students who accept several years ago.)

Other top schools use less thorough practices. Recommendation letters get phone-call follow-ups at Duke, while UCLA applicants are required to send along contact info for the favorite of resume puffers everywhere — extracurriculars.

Recent applicants — please give us the down and dirty on reference/background check requirements.
