European private equity firm founded in 1977 with offices in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Milan.

Though the company has historically focused on European-based companies valued at €500MM or above, the firm is slated to open Hong Kong and New York offices are slated to in early 2009 with the aim of “support[ing] … internationally active portfolio companies and build[ing] closer relationships with our investors based in North America and the Asia-Pacific region.”

Investments are focused in the in business and financial services, healthcare, industrials, retail, leisure and consumer, and telecom/media.

According to their website, does not hire interns or hire new graduates. Titles for the firm proceed from Associate, to Principal to Partner.

Its name stems from its origins as Coal Investment Nominees for Venture Capital, or British Coal’s VC unit.
