BBall Consumer Report

  • Spotted Trump Super Premium Vodka at Buy Rite in Murray Hill, deeply discounted. A bottle of sleek super pre’ in its skyscraper-like bottle can be had for under $30. Non-NYCers can stock up at the reliable Bev Mo.
  • Let me guess. You’ve bought yourself a couple pairs of oversized insignia “Big Polo” Polo shirts, but just come to the shattering realization that Polo’s just not … well, just not white enough? Then it’s time to turn to an even more niche, WASPy sport — Rugby. A Ralph Lauren outpost on 99 University has been opened for years now and offers up shirts that only someone desperate to be whiter than thou would be crazy enough to wear. So go crazy.

Bankers: Actually Terrible Dressers

Here at BankersBall we believe — nay we LIVE — the idea of “dretthin for succeth” . But a Forbes article makes us question D.T.S., who we are, and our very existence. (sob)

A JPMorgan candidate that scored an interview couldn’t put together a clean outfit. Says a JPMorgan recruiter, “‘I met with a guy just the other day, and he had an incredible resume but a white shirt with a coffee stain. All I did was stare at the shirt–I wasn’t even listening to what he was saying.’”

And it’s not just the clueless interviewees. Apparently you can get to VP level and still be a terrible dresser. Reports an anonymous Goldman Sachs associate: “‘I saw my boss wearing a pair of white socks with dress shoes in the office the other day …I thought, ‘Why would anyone put something like that together and think it looks OK?’ I’m no fashionista, but that’s just wrong.’”

So who wants to rat out the white sock wearer?

Bespoke Dress Shirts in NYC

MUG had a recent newsletter on custom shirts. Here they are:

  • Ascot Chang - intense flow chart of how to order a custom shirt, but nothing about prices.
  • Upstairs at Tom Ford
  • Liste Rouge, custom shirts go for $220 - $340
  • Cego, which claims to be “New York’s Best Custom Shirt Value”
  • Geneva Custom Shirts - hey, their website may be ghetto, but they say the POTUS and Colin Powell are among their clients. ($175-$250 … according to Cigar Aficionado)
  • Turnbull & Asser - $325. As we noted before, Turnbull and Asser’s bespoke and MTM shirts both run $325 (shirt commitments are 6 for custom, 3 for MTM). Incidentally, they’re having their annual sale right now.

While hunting around for info on some of these providers, we came across others.

  • Mark Christopher, custom shirtmakers to the dealmakers, charged about $150-$250 per shirt back in the late nineties. Shirts require up to 20 fittings…
  • French clothier Dormeuil
  • Robert Talbott

For downtowners, there’s a host of options in Nolita: Seize sur Vingt, Duncan Quinn and Lord Willy’s (all in the $200ish range). Still not satisfied? Here’s that list of upcoming visits from Savile Row tailors again.
