I just graduated from an Ivy League MBA program.
I worked as an architect/project manager in China for about five years before b-school. Interned at a small real estate PE firm focusing on international market last summer and loved my experience.
Is it too wild a dream for me to get into a real estate PE firm? Or what is a plausible strategy for me to build my way into such firms. I would not mind going back to China if there is a good opportunity.
Any advice is appreciated.

I am selling a Wall Street Prep Self Study Course in Financial and Valuation Modeling. This is the "Premium Package". I purchased this item from Wall Street Prep's website and it was very helpful to me. This is a great course and I recommend it for anyone pursuing a career in the financial services industry that wants to get ahead and learn an important skill that few people have coming out of college. I paid $500.00 + shipping for this course but I am willing to sell for less. Check out my ebay auction below:

I'm a Belgian journalist, working for the magazine Vacature (www.vacature.com) It seems that the investment banks in London are having quite a rough time now, and that, due to the subprime mortgage crisis, investment bankers - and other people working there - are losing their jobs. I'm working on a reportage for a Belgian magazine on this crisis that has struck the City. I would like to talk with London based people who have lost their jobs, london based investment bankers or london based experts.

The answer to this depends on where you are. In Southern Europe, brown shoes with blue trousers is acceptable. The English, however, would definitely almost always wear black shoes with a blue suit. In America, you're better off going with the brown cordovan shoes, as was mentioned above. The Germans find the look detestable.

Also, leave the white shirts for interviews and more formal events. Wear them sparingly. It just shows you're trying too hard to play it safe and that you're being sartorialy lazy. It's the mark of a rookie.

The South African banking industry is experiencing significant growth, especially in terms of banking assets. During 2003-2006, asset growth recorded in the South African banking industry was higher than that witnessed in the global banking industry (though it was lower in 2004), according to “South African Banking Sector Analysis”, a new research report. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a considerable role in the development of South Africa’s economy. The number of multinationals with direct investments or employees in South Africa is increasing fast. Additionally, EU accounted for approx 66% of net foreign investment in South Africa in 2003 and 2004, and in 2005, EU’s share in the total assets held by foreigners in South Africa amounted to around 60%.

The research report provides valuable year on year trend analysis on the growing banking industry, and products and services offered by it. Its a thorough study on the structure of the South African banking industry and gives a detailed analysis of the driving and restraining forces operating in the industry.

Key Findings

The YOY banking industry deposits in South Africa increased by 24.4% in 2006 as compared to a 19.8% YOY hike in 2005.

During 2002-2006, banking loans grew at a CAGR of 18.03% due to lower interest rate and rising consumer expenditure in South Africa.

The number of credit card purchases increased at a CAGR of 13.18% between 2002 and 2006.

Rising disposable income, along with other factors, will drive the South African banking industry deposits to grow at a projected CAGR of 4.8% by 2011.

During 2007-2011, net interest income of the South African banking industry is expected to surge at a CAGR of 13.19% due to rising interest margins and soaring return on banking investments.

Key Issues & Facts Analyzed

Market analysis of different product segments in the South African banking industry.

I've got a question about my situation, maybe some of you in the field might be able to help.

My background is in urban planning, real estate and construction - aprox. 2.5 years. I got my bachelor's in the US, worked for a bit, and came down to my home country of Brazil, where I was able to secure a better job than I would had I stayed in Florida. I am now going back to get my M.S. in RE at NYU.

I have strong interest in companies with an international presence, especially in Latin America, and want to secure a position in RE PE while attending my master's. The problem is I have no experience as an analyst. What route should I take to get more experience, and what kind of salary should I be looking at as a first year analyst?

Hello all! New to the board here. I'm a Finance Intermediary for Oil and Gas, Real Estate and Entertainment (High profile producers looking for money to fund their film slates). Essentially, people come to me to find funding for their projects and they pay me a fee to procure that funding.

Now that that's out of the way, here's my challenge; I've got some really nice Real Estate development projects, some are commercial, some are residential with Golf courses, etc.. I'm looking to establish more relationships with PE Funds or Hedge Funds that are willing and able to do these deals.

If you're someone that can assist I'd be most appreciative. Deal sizes range from $20Million to $1Billion.

I am currently a sophomore, undergrad. I have a few years of real estate experience under my belt (marketing, mortgages, and new development sales), however banking is my focus in school. What would you suggest is the best starting point, essentially for a job like yours?

Hey everyone, I recently accepted a Pre-MBA PE position in Chicago. Can anyone with experience or insight think through their first 90 days in private equity and try and give me a list of pointers, bullet points, sound bytes, or whatever, on things you did that stood out to others as very positive, things you were told to do to prep yourself or things you wish you would have done in your first 90 days. I'm trying to productively use my pre-hire down time to prepare as well as get a sense for things I can do right away to add value/show initiative and stand out. Thanks a lot.

I think some of the junior's here are a little confused. No one is going to pay a second year analyst (who has 2 years full-time experience) $365k. Cameron clearly has more than 2 years experience, and I have a feeling he is being just a TAD bit aggressive with his compensation estimate. The only guys hitting those numbers are the quant-jocks that write algorithms for hedge funds (you're talking about the guys that have Master's in Finance before they can legally buy a beer), but even those days are long over. The highest compensation package for an top candidate straight out of college (ie Harvard with Honors and all the right internships) was $60-$65k base and 50-100% bonus (TOP Ibank). Again, I am talking about the BEST candidate from the BEST school with the BEST grades at the BEST firm (I know b/c my good friend fits this profile).

I am a third year with one of the most successful and well-regarded RE Private Equity shops in the world and all-in I'll pull down approx. $150k this year, but I get to sleep more than my banker friends and I get to travel to exotic destinations for "work". Dallas, your starting base was average but the bonus is definitely on the weak side. On the other hand, as bigwig and ar84 have kindly opined, you are in Dallas, you can buy a 4,000SF McMansion for $500k out there. You should probably move to SF, NY, or LA, boost your base, then go back to Dallas and buy the Maverick's with your new 6-figure salary.

I'm going to be a freshman next year in UIUC's engineering program, but I want to go into finance (hopefully IB). I'm really worried about UIUC's network--it's obviously nothing like a top LAC or an Ivy in terms of IB network strength. If I continued with engineering at UIUC (a top 5 engineering school), would I even be looked at for an internship in finance?

Also in terms of post-grad jobs, would it be a better option for me to try to transfer to another school with a stronger finance program or stick with engineering?

thanks so much for your help...i'm having a pre-quarter life crisis.
