Hi Ex-Working Girl,
I truly enjoy reading your posts. Since you have five years of experience in the finance world, I wanted to know your opinion. Is it worth switching careers to IB from technology at the age of 27? I mean, I am very interested in finance, however, I fear that at such age it is a little too late to jump and actually to succeed. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
TechGirl
Dear TechGirl,
Thank you for writing me. I often times had the responsibility of reading through stacks of resumes and picking the ones that would make the cut of first round interviews. And I would also be involved in interviewing these candidates all the way through final rounds.
And to be 100% honest, I would not have picked someone with only tech experience in their background as a candidate. And without a MBA under your belt, you would essentially be competing with kids right out of college for analyst positions. Bankers would much rather mold a newbie than try to change someone from another industry.
However, if you are interested in pursuing IB, it is not too late. If I were you, I would look into B-schools. Making the transition from tech to IB would be much easier if you go through the revolving doors of a B-school. B-schools are also great for holding your hand through the whole job-search process. And with your tech background, perhaps you would be interested in joining a group specializing in the tech sector.
Best of luck.
